My first (and only) tegu is a golden. I did not realize until after I had purchased him, that they are said to be the hardest to tame and deal with. I really like him, but I am sure there are nicer ones out there. Good luck

my first was a red, it worked out good. but they arent the easiest beginner tegu's if you can keep up with the diet and shedding issues than you will do fine. unlike other tegus they ave to eat fruit with vitamin c or they wont shed well. and the still need help at times. a black and white would be easier but i think reds are awesome looking.

as for keeping it outdoors. it can be done in florida but it will not be easy. you have to be very carefull. you still get frost in florida. if your tegu isnt hibernating at the time that will be a disaster. i would advise and indoor enclosure atleast for the winter, and outdoor in the summer. if you talk to bennet ant beardiedragon.com he keeps reds outdoors in florida. he would be a great resource for you.

i have a pair of reds and love them. people always ask about begginner lizards, and i say a red is your finishing lizard because once u own one ur never going to want any other kind of lizard. what r u going to do get another big lizard that lives 20 years and if you're successful with it and it passes into oblivion then u'll feel ready for the more expensive red. if u want a doberman do u buy a mut first so u'll know how to care for a dog?
