Caiman Teeth

blackzilla Jan 13, 2006 11:36 PM

At our facility we aquired some large caimans over a year ago. Over the last few months the teeth have started to point outwards. Now very few point downwards. And the color of the inner mouth isn't a nice bright pink, it is more pale. What is the cause, malnution or some kind of mouth infection or what. Oh it is kept indoors i don't know if that has anything do do with it.

please help

There really isn't a DEFINITE answer to what causes splayed teeth in captive crocodilians. It ONLY happens in captive animals. What are the animals diets consisting of? Any access to natural light by chance? I am not sure exactly what the answer would be, but would LOVE to figure it out.

Another question, do crocodilians kept outdoors get this splayed tooth syndrome?

goini04 Jan 15, 2006 12:37 AM

Well, that is actually debateable I would suppose. One person a while back mentioned that splayed teeth are quite common in animals that are housed on concrete. Perhaps some longer term owners might have a bit more insight to this. I am not personally aware of any animals housed outside in a more "comfortable" environment have this particular issue, but again, perhaps those who keep their crocs outdoors can shed some light on their experiences.
