Shell Repair?

turtle_22 Jan 14, 2006 09:34 AM

Hi,

My male box turtle has managed to permanently chip away fragments of my female's shell. He bites persistently to try to mate. I sometimes separate the two, and then he acts depressed.
As soon as he gets back in with her, he's back to his old self, of course! I even got another female to try to occupy him and he has been mating with her a bit which is a help.
The question is, what substance can I use that is safe to add & sculpt back the rest of her shell to help protect her? It's to the point where she soon will not have any protection when she withdraws into her shell.

Thanks!

Seperate them permanently. Why on earth would you leave them together after he's done that amount of damage to her. And don't use the "He gets depressed excuse". He'll be just fine on his own.

I agree he'll be fine on his own. My males get angry at me for taking the females away but I look at it this way: tough. Get mad I don't care because letting them near one another causes more problems than not.

In about 2-3 minutes the males go about their business without girls & do just fine especially if I give them something tasty to eat.
This year when they go outside these males & females aren't even going to see one another at all so it won't matter.
As for the damaged shell.. check with a good reptile vet on that. The products for shell repair seem to keep changing & they get better all the time.
