mites in my meal worm bin

dreamer Jan 14, 2006 09:44 AM

I've been successfully growing meal worms in wheat bran. However after a couple of months the bin becomes infested with tiny, yellowish mites. I've tried several ideas but none have worked. Anyone have any ideas?

Those are grain mites. I've had the problem when I first bred mealworms.

The solution is to use less vegs &/or fruit on/in the mealworms' substrate. Another cause could be too much humidity in the room that you have your mealworms in. I also use a small fan to keep the air circulating in my feeder-insect room; this greatly offsets the potential problem with grain mites.

I wrote an article on this problem quite a while ago & may still be found within the KS archives.

Goodluck
