Rainbow boas

scatha Jan 14, 2006 10:20 AM

This may sound like a stupid question, but I bought a boa from a friend of mine. He said it is a red tail, which I told him it wasn't, but we recently noticed it shimmered in rainbow colors in the sunlight, does this mean it is either part rainbow or a certain breed? Otherwise it just looks like a normal boa constictor. Is this just what boas do? I haven't had one before and haven't done much research on different types of boas. I'm just curious, thanks in advance for the info.

A lot of snakes have what is called "iridescence" (the shiny rainbow appearance similar to that found in oil slicks). Rainbow Boas have a very prominant iridescence, hence the name. It is probably just a nice looking Boa Constrictor. Lots of people call normal Boas red-tails, even if they aren't true red-tails. Rainbow Boas and Boa Constrictors CANNOT be crossed. I haven't heard of any Boids of different genus crossing, other than Some Morelia and Liasis species, and that I am sure is very difficult.
