Egg question

Daniel J Jul 25, 2003 06:31 AM

I got a pair of malagasy giant hognoses a while back, and the female turned out to be gravid. I discovered the eggs and was greatly surprised. This is both the snake's and my first clutch. So I had to start off instantly with all this stuff. Got some great help getting started. Three eggs looked good, but one went bad pretty quick, in matter of a few days. The other two eggs where fine until a few days ago. We're now at day 43, and they are sagging. One's looking alittle more plump now, but the other one has big spots on it. Almost see through in a way. If I shine a light on it, it's clearly thinner then the non-spotted areas. It's grey/blueish. What could it be? What's up with the sagging? Both humidity and temps have been constant. It's not too dry in there, and I highly doubt it's too humid.

The sagging blue-gray egg would most likely be infertile (aka "slug". You can candle the eggs and make comparisons. Generally, fertile eggs would show veination and usually tend to have yellow/orange coloring when candled.
