feeding chicken

jpaner Jan 14, 2006 06:37 PM

We are getting donations of extra chicken parts from a local chicken processor. Since these are not for human use they are covered with carbon to mark them. I've been washing most of this off and don't see it as too much of a problem - any thoughts on it?

Also we trim off much of the fat and cook it before feeding. This is not 100% of the diet, but does make up a good part. Can anyone suggest a vitamin supplement?

Thanks

Can't really help with your other questions, but I would be interested to know the answers to that myself. However, as far as a vitamin supplement is concerned, "Miner-all" by Sticky Tongue farms can't be beat. You should also look into the Mazuri Crocodilian diet....good stuff!

Yes - The Mazuri diet is great, but I still like to give some other feed items. The upside is that this chicken is a donation. I would need to buy the vitamins in bulk as this would be going to 50 or so animals.

I dont know to much about the "carbon" isssue, but the chicken products you are talking about are commonly used for a wide variety of animals, cats, crocodilians, etc..

What kind of supliment are you looking to get, just a basic type supliment correct? I used to use this one but I cant remember the name of it off hand, but I used to buy it in 50 LB buckets and that was the smallest amount available, it was a great sup ... You can find this and many more similar sup's available in the Animal Finders Guide, they are marketed towards the big cat industry but should work great for croc's as well.

Why are you cutting off the fat and cooking? cooking takes away a lot of the natural properties. fat and bone are also good and needed as far as nutrition goes.

There is always some fat, but we try to reduce it as much as we can. We lightly cook the chicken because chicken from a processor isn't very clean - it also helps reduce the fat.

I tried a new one today, just a little treat to test it out and it seemed to go over pretty well with the croc's

I used 1 lb ground beef, about 1/4 lb of the Maurzi croc chow. I crushed up the croc chow and mixed it into the ground beef.

Any body notice there crocodilians having food preferances, like a favorite food?

All of my animals eat a wide variety of foods, for example...

my siamese goes nuts over mauzri croc chow, my drawf caiman goes crazy over live fish, my salty/siamese goes crazy over any type of meat ... while the others dont seem to have any special preferance.

My Trigonatus will eat chicken and ONLY chicken. He refuses to eat anything else. My gator however, will pretty much eat anything that is thrown at him.
