Eggs in January?

JB71RT Jan 15, 2006 11:05 AM

I was surprised the other night to find my hybrid, Ginger, laying eggs. I haven't heard of cyclura laying eggs so late before. Anyway she's doing fine. She laid 6 eggs this time, none are fertile though. Has anybody else had their cyclura lay this time of year? How unusual is this? Any thoughts? John

what kind of cage do you have your hybrid in? is it a dog kennel? ive been thinking of using something like that for my cuban. maybe one of those dog kennels that you can put together yourself. something thats maybe 8' x 4' x 3'. the only problem is flooring. probably doesnt come with a bottom. any suggestions?

The cage is a cat/ ferret cage. I found it on the PetSmart website. It is 55in tall, by 43in wide, by 30 deep. I have artificial turf in the bottom along with her hide box. It is on wheels with a nice tray bottom. It's just the right size to wheel outside for cleaning and for getting some natural sunshine. For some extra excersise I let her freeroam in the sunroom when I can. If you can't dedicate a whole room just for your iguana, it is a nice alternative. Good luck with yours, and let us know what you find.

Take Care,
John

A Michigan ferret rescue donated about 10 of those cages to our reptile rescue and I use them for smaller iguanas. If you haven't already tried it, hang one of those nice fleece ferret hammocks in there close to the top. All of the iguanas here love them!!

Good that she got rid of the eggs rather than get eggbound. Often a change of environment will stimulate an ig to lay some eggs that have been brewing for awhile. A guy had hatchlings in June - he put his nubila outside for the first time in March, and it layed under the dog house. Inheirited a nubila awhile ago that had not layed in 3 years, she layed 8 slugs 2 weeks after getting her. Some will never produce eggs if environment is not suitable. Others lay eggs annually. There is some debate to if cyclura can reabsorb eggs. My experience convinces me that they can - provided they do not get too far developed during the summer months when the female is thinking about laying. If your ig stays indoors always her light cycle may be messed up -- A more expected egg time would be June.
