What is your egg/hatch success rate???

kstrope01 Jul 25, 2003 07:58 AM

What is your eggs laid to hatch ratio??? I sometimes get one of two eggs die early, I am the only one that has this problem...

I have all of my eggs in an incubator that are stored seperatly in individual containers. I dont have problems with mold but...for instance last week I had an egg that was growing healthy for 6 1/2 weeks (mine usually hatch around 7 weeks). Just a couple days before it was suppose to hatch it turned a yellow tent and started to dent. I misted the perlite but the egg never recovered. I dont think it was a mold problem or a dehydration problem. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?

I temperature sex the hatchlings. I only have one incubator so for the first couple weeks after adding new eggs I drop the temp to 80-83 but then raise it to just below 90. I think I might have done this before the egg was ready to hatch. Maybe this caused the egg to die???

While I have your attention...I picked up to females from a petstore. Someone didnt want them so I picked them up for cheap. One normal and one high yellow. I dont know how old either of them are but they are healthy adults. Both have laid several clutches this year but none of the eggs have been fertile???

so far, out of 4 eggs i've incubated, only 2 of them have hatched. the first two eggs were growing fine, and then on day 55 of incubation one of them shrunk down and started to mold...the baby was still-born. Then on day 57 of incubation the baby inside the other egg split the shell with its tail by accident and died...another still-born. i don't know what went wrong with those two eggs. the other two eggs hatched on tuesday and and wednesday and i am happy to report the babies are healthy and doing great. as for those females laying infertile eggs, female leos can lay eggs without mating (kindof like how birds will sometimes) but they won't be fertile.

I too only have one incubator. I keep one container in there that can take about 15 or so eggs. (I only have a 1.2 setup, one male two female.)

I keep the temperature at a constant 82-83f. I know people have used the temper method of turning the heat up but I've also ready people have problems with it so I just keep to the same temperature through out. Do you really need to rush their hatching?

As for the moisture issue. Make sure that you don't wet the egss. If your adding water to perlite I normally just pour alittle WARM water down the edge of the box. This way the eggs don't get wet, there is no temp drop and the water is absorbed and distributed through the temperature within the container. (I use the abbey method of incubation.)

This is a dam good way to incubate eggs.

I had my 1st two clutchs one set has hatched and are doing well and the other I am expecting to hathc within a few days.

Hope that helps some.
