donde esta las culebras aqui? mexican zoos are a bit different

A trip to the zoo in Santiago Mexico was a bit interesting. I went to see the snakes (I heard they had a few) and I was directed to a large Burmese python. I said this was not really what I was looking for...I wanted the kinds with the rattles.

They too me over to a big ring of snakes held in by a concrete wall (maybe stomach height). They had like 5 or six rattle snakes and I do not know how many Pituophis. They had plenty of space let me tell ya. The center of the ring was sand but their was a concrete "moat" around the edge which was dry...but I am guessing this was to collect rain for drinking water.

I do not know what they guy I was with told the police officer running the zoo (my spanish is minimal) but he asked me if I wanted to grab a hook out of the car and move any of the snakes to get better pictures.

Sure...I never had a zoo ask me if I wanted to play with their rattle snakes before. Once I picked this fella out of its coil I realized it was a good sized rattle snake. We got it on the sand (it was in the "moat" and allowed him/her to move where s/he wanted to go for a photo...this cactus was perfect. My photos were not. I have pictures of all the snakes there but this one seemed worth putting on KS for a fun story. Sorry if it is a boring story and no fun at all.

Sounds like a fun, relaxed zoo.
