Let's talk Pastels....Is any LINE better than any other...REALLY?

EmberBall Jan 15, 2006 03:57 PM

I see alot of fancy names for new lines of Pastels. I am of the opinion that for the most part, a Pastel is a Pastel is a Pastel, as far as LINES go. I will agree that there are nicer individuals produced in each line, nicer than the average Pastel, but does any LINE consistantly produce nicer Pastels than any other line?

IMO calling an "Enchi Pastel" a regular pastel is in and of itself a crime! Have had this argument before against a few big breeders, and no one seems to agree so maybe I'm wrong, but my eyes tell me I'm right!

First off, here is a pic of one: http://sweball.com/snakes/16large.jpg

Secondly, here is the link to another post about enchis over at RDR Forums: http://www.ralphdavisreptiles.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4843&whichpage=3&SearchTerms=enchi

My post there is about 1/3 of the way down the page, and sums up most of my points, although no one there addressed the points I brought up.

In summary, just in case you don't want to go to that page, or can't, basically what I was saying is that Enchi's are a patter/color mutation and thus are ruled out as a normal pastel. The only way to prove it either way though is to get both reg pastel trait, and enchi within same animal(need to ask if this animal looks like a super pastel as well, if it doesn't then most likely they are different locations), then breed that out and see if you get enchi's and pastels, or just pastels.

Fascinating argument, and all we can do for now is dispute back and forth, and wait for the breedings to prove it either way, exciting for sure!

There are better types of pastels depending on your preference, I like Ruppells best of all then there are Enchi's Blondes and Lemons on top of the standard pastel (seems like I left something out)- there are of course ugly ones and ones that brown out in any line - I think you also need to take into consideration that when bred to pastels some normals produce a nicer, cleaner looking pastel then others - so if you want to produce a good line - you not only think about what pastel you put into it but what normals you use also.

Ruppell pastel (not mine)

"so if you want to produce a good line - you not only think about what pastel you put into it but what normals you use also."

I hear that opinion a lot, but when you breed 1 very nice pastel with 1 very nice normal you can easily get ugly pastels right along with nice pastels in the same clutch. So it really doesn't seem to be a given either. There are good and bad pastels it seems in every line. You also have to take into consideration, how many people produce NICE pastels from one line and might label it another line to assist in a sale??? Hmm....does this buyer want Graziani or Bell...okay, then that's what it is! Personally if I'm shopping for a pastel, I'd go by look, not name. Just my opinion, take care!

Enchis and Zebras too but for something more affordable the lemons and blondes are great. I think that there are killer Bells, Grazianis, and others but the lemons seem to be cleaner, and more contrasty and the Blondes are all around killer animals too. I personally have Bell animals and Lemons and I love them all but the Lemons are keeping the color better at 500 grams...for now anyway, who knows what will happen with any of them.

I believe Amir has his own line of pastels. Sunset Pastels or something. I think they're superior to all other lines. (LOL)

There is no difference. it is all marketing, and new pastels come in every year. In any clutch of pastels you hatch out, there are screamers and dogs. Look at the advertisements ... are there any differences in what's being sold ? Nope.

if you haven't noticed the difference with the enchi pastels, you must not have seen the homozygous form yet. not to mention the color of the hets as they get older. much better than most other pastel lines imho. (not sure if they are really worth the price disparancy compared to normal pastels...but that's a whole 'nuther topic.
