need input

okay, first off lets start out to the simple fact that im not an amphibian fan. regardless, a friend of mine at my last job stated she wanted a pet salamander. so i bought her one fairly cheap and brought it to her. she cringed when i told her salamnders eat crickets and she said she couldnt bear to harm the poor crickets so here i am stuck with the little guy. ive done a bit of research on this type (texas tiger) but havent gotten much. im not sure of what size the adults are supposed to be or how often they should be fed. i feed him about 3-5 freeze dried crickets per day but im not sure if that's too much or too little. i give him the occasional pinky mouse if i have any extra (usually dont) and feed him less if he starts looking a bit pudgy around the middle.i have a decent sized water dish for him that he usually hangs out in and it is cleaned daily with hot water (no chemicals), his substrate is corn cob and i very rarely handle him. anyway, here are a couple pics of him. id appreciate any input as far as the little guy goes. remember, im not a keeper of amphibians (besides this one) so if you see something wrong try not to be rude about it. thanks much and have a good one.

you have a nice looking barred tiger salamander, but he would most likely be much happier in a tank, 10- 15 gal at least, 20 long or bigger is better, with a topsoil or coconut fiber based substrate, like jungle mix, forest bed or bed-a-beast, kept relativly moist. they are a burrowing species so a few inches, at least 2" and up to 8" if room. A large, but shallow dish, 2-4" deep should be used. they also like to hid if they are not buried, so a hide log and some moss would be good to add, as well as ome live plants if possible, like pothos, arum, peppermonia, ferns, etc. As for feeding, i would feed live crickets as apposed to frozen and since pinkies are high in fat, they should only be fed once every month or two at the most. they are very aggressive feeders and love earthworms, mealworms, waxworms, goldfish, rosie reds and cockroaches, perferbly jsut after shedding when they are still soft. They can take large mice depending on the size of your salamander, nothing bigger than its head is a good general rule when feeding it larger items, same as for the size of goldfish and roaches.
hopes this helps.
