broken tail

blackzilla Jan 15, 2006 11:41 PM

I have 4 hatchling ctenosauras house together. I 've had them for about 2 months. All are in perfect health. Then this morning i find half a tail in the substrate, sadly i look to see a lizard with a numbed tail. This was very weird to me i couldn't figuer out why this animal would drop or lose it's tail. they're too young to be fighting. Later on today i thought about it. I keep many tarantulas, and for the first time i set up a new tarantula enclosure right next to the lizards. Maybe one of them got freaked out enough to break it's tail. Tarantulas do eat lizards, and the particular one i had next to them sare the same habitat(it is a mexican red-knee). I dont know... has anyone experienced their lizards drop their tail without physical contact.

Baby Ctenosaura do fight. That is probably what happened. Iguanas just do not "drop" thier tails. Or maybe it's tail got caught on some of the cage furnishings.

Could have been a flighty lizard releasing the tail on fear, but if I had to bet some money, I would put it on fighting with cagemates.
