Prefer rats as it is easier as they get larger to feed one appropriately sized rat, instead of multiple mice.
I do have one girl that will only take F/T mice from Petco (talk about brand loyalty) Also Prefer F/T because it is hard to find live rat pups, and weanlings in my area. I don't have enough Animals to warrant having live delivered....YET
I use apen bedding, because it looks nice and is easy to spot clean, but it can be very Drying... You should investigate what is best for the type of set up you have (rack , aquarium, reptile cage....)
Good Luck!

1. Rats I rais my own so its easyer to accommodate all sizes.
2. Repti Bark seens to keep the humidity where I need it and its easly spot cleaned. A little pricey I usually reuse it once by resterilizing(cook 275 for 30 min.)

i prefer to feed my snakes rats, they get larger faster, and will eat just about anything, so they are easier to raise.
above all that, they have a greater bone density than mice, so there is more calcium available for the snakes.
for the second q i use indoor outdoor carpet, cleaned and disinfected once a month, it holds some humidity, and it is easier to see when it is soiled.
in my bullsnake, leopard and day gecko terrarums, i use orchid bark, without perlite. the one i use also has rocks in it. i find it holds the humidity , and the pieces are too large for the snake, or geckos to ingest, and it is $2.79/kg instead of the bedabeast that is finer and 12$/kg
I also perfer Rats, and Newspaper. Not pretty, but cleanup is a snap!
