I am very lucky to have found Dr Barney Oldfield, who has a special love for collared lizards. He's been here all along, and somehow that fact passed me by. He knows of our forum and said he's been herping with Will Wells. Check out his page and fabulous photography (not limited to lizards) at:

www.lizardsandlandscapes.com

Little Cadence has a respiratory infection. We saw Dr Oldfield on Thursday and again today. Each time she got an injection of Baytril and will get another Wednesday. He also prescribed her a nutritional supplement called Nutri-Cal. It is a thick, gelatinous stuff that I am having to force into her with a syringe. Her breathing has improved. Last week she was waking up with crust around her jaws and stringy mucous inside her mouth. That seems to be gone, as is the popping noise when she breathes, although the noise reappears when she is stressed. She does not open her mouth as often but is still sitting with her head up, to make breathing easier. It is hard to believe that not too long ago she was my fat girl with too many neck rolls to count! She is maybe 17 months old and weighs 20 grams now. Dr Oldfield says she is not that thin, considering she just had a clutch of eggs a month ago. As the other lizards have already been exposed, he said I did not have to isolate her unless she was not staying warm or had too much competition for food. I have seen her chase down crickets and am not sure that she has ever stopped eating, she just is not putting the weight back on. Her pregnancy took every spare fat cell she had! She basks or retreats to the heated cave, so I have not moved her yet. Anyway, so far I am cautiously hopeful that she will have a full recovery and am so grateful to have found a vet that knows so much about my babies. And I am grateful for this forum. Because of all of you, I have learned so much about keeping them. No time was lost because she got see a Dr immediately.

She was very fortunate to have you looking out for her. I know how fast they can go with a respiratory infection, and there is simply no time to spare. I'm glad you caught the infection in time!

I have used Nutri-Cal for lizards too, but I was under the impression that it was designed mainly for herbivores. To put weight back on a collared quickly, I have had great success with "Prescription A/D," which is a canned dog/cat food for anorexic animals that is available at the vet's office. I mix in a little water, vitamins and calcium to make a paste to put in a syringe. I have never had a lizard fail to gain weight on that mixture. It is very high calorie, potent stuff.

How are YOU doing, by the way??

I'll see if he has it when we go on Wednesday. I get the impression this is more an upper respiratory infection, because he did prepare me for the fact that it could be fatal if it goes into pneumonia. He said because lizards do not have a diaphragm, they cannot cough and clear their lungs.
I have been ill, too, with a sinus infection. But this has all happened over a period of scheduled time off from work, so I am able to deal with it all. I'm on antibiotics and getting better, too. Thanks for the support!

I honestly don't know which is worse--getting sick on vacation or when you're supposed to be working. I'm sorry you're under the weather. I had my first ever sinus infection late last year and nearly ended up in the hospital. They're certainly not to be taken lightly, I have learned.

I hope you're better in a jiffy!

Thanks Vonnie,

I think today she looked a little better. And yes, this forum is wonderful. Everyone is so nice and helpful. Nearly every other forum I have read online gets full of personal issues between people and the real cause is lost. I have never seen that happen here.

and not drinking, except for grabbing bites of snow, and throwing it all back up, we were pretty darn upset to say the least.

This has been all consuming, they gave him a chemo injection last night, that IF he was responsive , it may help him to stop feeling sick and he would get an appetite back. I have cooked every good and tasty thing in the past 2 weeks that we could think of, with no success.
And not drinking just added to the horror of it all. Watching him starve to death, and right after going thru surgery, poor thing.

He looked dizzy last night and continued to throw up. But he did that before the chemo. Anyway we called the Vet and Grizzly went in tonight and got some fluids injected, so he could absorb them.
Within 2 hours of bringing him home after the fluids, I reluctantly offered him a chunk of steak, figuring he would turn away as he has been, BUT................

Low and behold, the GORGEOUS STINKER GRABBED the STEAK and ATE IT. You would have thought we won the TRILLION dollar lottery.
I screamed for my hubby who came flying down the steps, and I said watch this, and handed Grizzly another hunk of steak which he also CONSUMED and we were elated.

It will be a long haul, but it seems he's responding positively to the chemo and is getting an appetite back. Hopefully he will continue to eat. Seems theres a very good response rate with Canine lymhphoma.( For remission )

I felt JOY tonight for the first time in a couple LONG weeks.
Long way to go, think by the time we are done we WILL need to win the Trillion dollar lottery to pay for all this,
*** Thought I would come out tonight and relax a bit

I'm so sorry things have been so difficult for all of you. Hopefully Grizzly having a little to eat will start a continuing upward trend!
