black salamander

sc_shark Jan 16, 2006 10:46 PM

Found this black salamander on 1/12/06 hiding in a rock quarry nestled among the redwood trees at UC Santa Cruz. It was a mini field herping excursion for my herpetology class this quarter. Overall we found 29 salamanders, mostly yellow-eyed Ensatina and Batrachoseps, but with a few black salamanders. This weekend we are going to the Eel river to look for tailed frogs and other amphibians, I can't wait!

I'm trying to get a really good macro shot of an Ensatina; their eyes look awesome close up.

Great stuff. Looking forward to the report from Eel River, you guys should find lots of stuff, including those tailed Frogs you’re after. From what I have seen on the News it’s drenched up there right now.

I would love to see more pics of California Salamanders and other herps. Please post them as you get them.
