Found this black salamander on 1/12/06 hiding in a rock quarry nestled among the redwood trees at UC Santa Cruz. It was a mini field herping excursion for my herpetology class this quarter. Overall we found 29 salamanders, mostly yellow-eyed Ensatina and Batrachoseps, but with a few black salamanders. This weekend we are going to the Eel river to look for tailed frogs and other amphibians, I can't wait!
I'm trying to get a really good macro shot of an Ensatina; their eyes look awesome close up.
