ESCAPE!

phiber_optikx Jan 17, 2006 03:03 AM

Tonight Hope thought it would be amusing to escape from her cage right in front of me. I know several of you will disagree with me but I honestly think she was coming to me. Because she was hiding, and then I went and picked up Onyx whos cage is 3' under Hope's. So I am sitting on my bed directly in front of Hope's tank (about1' away) and she comes out of her hide, through the lid and right up to me. I am glad she decided to make her break while I was watching so I know she is able. This proves that the cage locks are not escape proof because she has 2 on her lid.

Whoa, lucky thing you were there. The clamps I have on my screen top, I can't even get loose with prying them open with a knife. Fiesty little girl, isn't she? And pretty too.

That's why I like the reptile tanks from Petsmart. The screen top slides through a groove, with a key tab that then protrudes through a slot in the back. You put a spring clip through the tab/slot and that sucker is not coming off for anything!

They have them in 5, 10, and 20 gallon sizes. Since my '05s are still babies, I've got them each in a 5 gallon, but will be moving up as they grow.

I like the slide on lids as well. Petco has nice ones, that slide in and have two clamps at the back. The come in sizes up to like 60 gal.

I wish my snakes would wait until I was watching, to escape. You got lucky!

If you only have two clips put one in the center of each end.
When you get two more clips, which you should, put two on each side.

Go to petco or a different pet store and get real retaining clips those that you are using aren't worth a damn! you should only need one set per aquarium. The good ones look like a number 7 and work very well!

I have never trusted those types of tops. they are great for lizards but worthless for snakes. I have 2 big problems with them, they are split on the corners so smaller snakes can actually work through there, and they also leave the inside rim of the tank exposed which allows a snake to get between the rim and the lid making it easier to get leverage to pry open the top.

The newer tank tops are the reason I built a rack type enclosure. Bad part is now I have a lot more snakes due to the extra room, ok so maybe its not that bad.

No way...

Those spring clips lock the lid in VERY tight. Also, since it's a groove, there's no way to pry it up/out.

I keep a young boa "About 18" in a 40G with a screen top. I use 6 of those spring steel locks on the lid with no problems. My corns and Gophers "Young ones" can get in the groove but not pry the lid opend with these lock however my young boa can harly fit her toung in the groove let alone anough body to get any leverage,
