Our Uro is sick , any suggestions?( sorry so long)

1gambit Jan 17, 2006 08:49 AM

We have a male (we think Egyptian) Uro, Thor, that is approx 6 years old (he is about 14in long). We also have a female Mali Uro, Liz, that is 5.5 years old (she was real small when we got her, she is now 8 or 9in long). They have been staying with my sister for the past year and a half due to damage to our home from Hurricane Charley. My sister called me to tell me that Thor wasn't looking good and when he hissed at Liz, he had mucus around his mouth and then went a laid under the lamp and had not moved. My husband I went there immediatedly and we soaked him in some lukewarm water, which brought him to life and perked him up for a bit, he did open his eyes and looked at us and started to wheeze. I searched through their tank and found where it looks like he vomited, so we took him to the vet immediately. I have just been sick all night long worrying about him. Liz appears to be fine and proceeded to eat lots once Thor was out of the tank. I just hope that Thor will be fine and that everything is ok. Has anyone had this happen to their Uro before?

The signs you mention point to a respiratory condition.
You said you took him to the vet immediately. What did the vet say?

I don't know yet. I am waiting for them to call me. I had to leave him overnight so I am worrying like crazy. I am taking it as no news is good news right now.

Well, you did the best thing possible.

If this is a respiratory condition like I suspect, mucus in the mouth is usually a sign that it is in the more advanced/later stage of the disease process. Aggressive antibiotic therapy will be the animal’s best chance at survival.

The vet just called and said that he is soaking Thor and he will give him an enema and do some blood work. He said he would have to keep him for a few days to see if he goes to the bathroom. He also informed me that the sand that I have keeping them in could be the problem. I use Bone-Aid Calci-sand and he said that does cause blockages. He recommended Lizard Liner, so I will be getting one today for Liz so that she doesn't get sick too.

The vet called to let me know that Thor's kidney's were failing and it didn't look good. He was going to "flush" his system and if that went well treat him with antibiotics. We have no clue where the infection came from, other than maybe my sister didn't wash her hands before handling him. My mom is cleaning their tank and removing all of the sand to eliminate any possible infection to Liz and I will be getting Liz to the vet soon just to be checked out. Please hope for the best!

I have heard that calci sand is one of the worst beddings for uro's because it hiders their digestive system and does cause blockages. I'm so sorry; i hope he pulls through.

I am so sorry to hear about Thor. We will all be hoping for the best for a complete recovery. Take care.

Just to let everyone know, Thor lost his battle last night. His kidney's failed on him. My husband, mother, sisters and I will miss him dearly. We are going to plant him with a Hibiscus bush in our yard so he will be with the flower he loved so much. As for Liz we will get her checked out and make sure she is fine and eventually get her a new "boyfriend", but none could replace him. I am almost thinking of calling her the "Black Widow", since Thor was her second boyfriend. Her first one died after we had him for two days and Thor was the replacement from the pet store. We had 5 good years with him and we will treasure that. Thank You everyone for all of your support.
