I've had an invasion - any advice?

LauraV Jul 25, 2003 10:13 AM

I don't know where they came from - potatoes or fruit - or wherever, but I 've had an invasion of those pesky little gnat-like fruit flies.
They are everywhere. They appear to be nesting in the moist hide of my geckos and my cricket bins, and everywhere else.
I cannot possibly change out the moist substrate on a daily basis, it would be highly impractical, time consuming and expensive. I change the moist hide on a weekly basis when I clen out the tanks, but I know it only takes a day or two for the eggs to hatch.
Does anyone have any neat little tips to help me get rid of these pesky little creatures?
Help!!

Man, those things are a pain in the .....neck.
I suggest setting up a temporary cage for your geckos as far away as possible from the flies (best scenario:a friend's house). Buy new moist substrate for their new temp home. Let everything in the old cage dry out, including any plants in or around the cage, for a week or two. Let any house plants in the area dry out too. They have to have a moist substrate to reproduce. Try to kill as many as you can find. They don't live long, so if you can break their life cycle, they'll disappear pretty quick. Hope this helps, and good luck.
