Switching to F/T

hogdaze Jan 17, 2006 10:41 AM

I have been trying to switch an 04 female to frozen/thawed for a few weeks now with little success. Is there a trick to it, or any tips that anyone can offer to make the transition easier?

I have just recently switched my male eastern over and here is what worked for me. I thaw the mouse out and rinse it under running water for about a minute, rubbing it very well around the head area. I then shake most of the water off and rub a live tree frog all over the head of the mouse. I have tried toad and treefrog, and have found a much greater response to the treefrog scent. I feed mine with a hemastat, and had to "jump" the mouse around at first to induce a feed response. 6 mice later I am still having to scent, but there is little to no hesitation now. Hope that might help you some.

Sorry, forgot to mention that it is a western and has been taking live pinkies with only a little hesitation, but has been reluctant to say the least with f/t. Thanks

Try moving it around a little to simulate being alive. Mine did not care for the f/t stuff either, and Easterns are supposedly much harder to convert. Mine is also WC. Now he opens up, but like I said, I feed w. a hemastat. I do not just lay it there, so there is some movement, even if it is just the unsteadiness of my hand.
