if i was to buy a young black rat snake from the store, about as thin as a pencil, what would i feed it? do they take pinkies or are insects more proper?

It will eat pinkies.
Just make sure the pinkies aren't more than around 1 1/2 times the diameter of the snake.
You would be surprised at what they can get down without problems.
