Dryness to the scales around the head...pics

aerosurfer Jan 17, 2006 04:28 PM

Ok so I have recently noticed the scales around my Yellow's head are becoming dry and flaky. It started prior to the last shed. The shed was normal and his appetite and attitude have not changed at all. He doesnt seem to be in any pain nor mind being touched around the affected areas, and about an inch behind his eyes his scales are normal for the rest of his body. Is the scale rot or something else, and of course what can I do about it? He does soak on a regular basis, but I do make sure he is out of the pool a few hours each week (normally 1-2 days straight). Water is changed regularly any thoughts

Over head lights and ceramic heating bulb.

Funny you should ask, I have been trying to figure out how to have an undertank heater, The cage is made of 1/2" thick laminated melamine, I have a layer of astroturf on the bottom, and the pool on top of that. What under tank (or more like Between floor and turf) could I get to not burn the wood or pose a fire hazard

Same Question for my Boa cage.....although in stead of Turf I have a layer of plexiglass on top of the wood.

Thanks

I don't know what this is and I am just throwing this out, but is it possible that he is touching the ceramic bulb at night when the primary lights are out? I say that because it reminds me of a very mild thermal burn. I would not rule out a scale infection however. If it progresses, I would definitely have a vet look at it.

not possible.....I have a cage over the ceramic bulb for just that reason. Also I have never seen him near the thing or rubbing against it. I'll watch it carefully to see if the scales change for the worse.

Is there any topical creams or lotions I can use for this, jsut as a precaution....it may sound funny, but Can I Moisturize my Snake?

Not sure what to tell you on this one. It is odd that it is restricted to the head region only. If it gets worse or spreads, I would be curious as to what a good reptile vet has to say. Thanks,

Kelly
