DAILY RECORD (York, Pennsylvania) 17 January 06 Body of iguana slows York Twp. Traffic (Brent Burkey)
Cpl. Ken Schollenberger said he's responded to calls concerning horses, snakes, cows, you name it.
But Monday morning was a first.
"This was my first iguana," said Schollenberger, who was on patrol for York Area Regional Police just after 9 a.m. He received a call from a York Township resident near Donna Lane, just off South Queen Street. Traffic was swerving from side to side. Something was lying in the roadway.
The something turned out to be a nearly 4-foot-long iguana. And it wasn't moving for the oncoming traffic.
The lizard was dead, although Schollenberger said he did not know whether it died from the cold weather or a passing car's tire.
"It would have been hard for a vehicle to straddle it," said Schollenberger, explaining the traffic tie-up.
He said it was a pretty simple call. He removed the iguana from the roadway, and a neighbor offered the use of his trash can.
Schollenberger said he doesn't know where the iguana came from or who the animal's owners were.
"We have no way to track it or anything," Schollenberger said. "I don't know if it escaped from a house or what."
Traffic was not severely affected by the carcass, he said.
