Anyone else use a generator?

Jaykis Jan 18, 2006 11:11 AM

I was reminded last night, since we had a power transformer blow on the pole outside, that it was a bit cold for the animals. I have a large generator that the heat tapes and lamps can be powered by, but it was only for 3.5 hours, and my basement floor is 62 degrees. Not enough to do any damage, except a couple pairs started mating If it had been below zero for any length of time, I would have had to crank up the generator. Anyone else with the same problem?

We've been thinking about getting one. This is a real concern for us. We had an ice storm a few years ago that left us without power for 2 or 3 days, but fortunately that was before we started keeping snakes.

Currently, we have a wood stove in the (furnished) basement. Once it gets going, it can pretty much heat the whole house regardles of the outside temp (which can be pretty low here in Rochester). In any extended outage, the basement can easily be kept over 70, with the upstairs over 60. But we have several enclosures upstairs that would need to be brought downstairs to keep the snakes comfy. So a generator might make things a little more convenient.

The other problem is that although pythons can survive varying temps, incubating eggs cannot. I'm going to put a battery backup on my incubator...

My house is on the same power grid as a state prison, the longest blackout we had in the last 5 years was about 2 minutes.

I can use it to power a space heater and even the incubator. I have had to use it 2 times although never for more than 8 hours. The power grid where I live is fairly new so it takes a major disruption to lose power.

Mine's about 8KV. I need the electrician to put the panel in, but it will run the blower on my furnace, the snakes, and my refridge. The main road nearby has a lot of accidents, and they take electric poles out often.
