price for mexican black

forkit Jan 18, 2006 01:08 PM

a chain pet store near me has a baby for $100. is this about right, or could i get one cheaper from a breeder?

i cant decide about buying animals from a chain pet store, i hate supporting the store, but i also feel like i am rescuing the animals from improper conditions...

I just got an 04 male from a reptile show for $50.00. Granted this guy was low on all his colubrids because he was more of a python guy but that should be about average for a baby.

You can get a nice one AND talk/start a good relationship with the breeder AND hand pick a long term perfect animal for a WHOLE lot less.

Many of us have rescued an animal from one of those places BUT you run the risk of bringing some kinfd of "problem" home to your other herps and it rewards their bad keeping because now they've sold one and will just go ourt and order another ("or two since we moved that one" ) Nothings changed.

Sometimes it's better that one pay the price for the many (wish it wasn't that way)

Good luck

The only reason these chain stores sell animals is because people will buy them. The only way to 'rescue' animals from being kept in bad conditions in these shops is to not buy them. Besides, they're making a killing (no pun intended) by charging that much for a mexican black!

is to buy at a show that way you don't don't have to pay for overnite shipping. I got these at a Breeders Expo for two corns and $20, i did biz with the seller b/4 and i'll likely do it again.

I checked a couple of breeds web sites and both sale Mexican Black Kingsnakes for 40 to 50 dollars. So, if you go to a snake show you can fine it even cheaper. Just my 2 cents.

Breeders sell them for $30-$50. Pet stores usually mark the price up by 200% to cover their overhead. You're best bet is to go to a reptile show. Keep in mind that if a breeder ships you a snake, it will cost an additional $30-$40.
