Suggestions for Winter-time enrichment activities for iguanas

jrbl Jan 18, 2006 03:11 PM

Greetings,
My igs, especially my male, are going nuts from being cooped up inside this winter. They climb on their mesh cage doors frequently, as to communicate that they want out. In the warmer months, they get to climb trees in my yard, and hunt for tasty morsels in the lawn. But during the winter, they don’t spend a great deal of time outside of their cage. Does anyone know of any good activities? All I can think to do is to give them baths and let them climb all over me. I can’t think of any stimulating activities, so I need some help.
Thanks for the help,
Josh

My male loves to look out the window. He is on the second
floor of my house and his cage backs up to a window. We have
alot of birds and such. It's funny because once in a while
a bird will fly to close to his window and he lays out flat
as if to hide from them. He does really seem to like the
interaction.

One note is that his cage is not an open type. It is wood. Plexiglass covers the top half of the back of his cage.
This prevents drafts when cold outside. His doors are made
of plexiglass also.

Just a suggestion

Are there any food items that your igs go nuts for? Smooth berries or grapes are great for this. Mine particularly likes blueberries, and if I space them out on a clean floor and let my ig wander around and pick them up one-by-one, it keeps him busy for a little while. Leaving a trail of them provides some fun, or even rolling them by the igs so that they have to catch them is a bit of entertainment. Don't overfeed treats of course.
