Impossible to feed fish/pinks, ONLY crickets OK?

sw0rdf15h Jan 18, 2006 03:24 PM

Basically my Pacman refuses anything but crickets. He's gotten so if my presence isn't immediately threatening after a while, he'll hunt down the crickets. he's a full three inches now from snout to vent, and I'd really like to mix up his diet. Still won't eat from tongs, I've given up. After a week of starvation, he won't touch a pinkie or a fish. I lay it down in front of his nose and leave. the next day the pinkie/fish is already dead, and he hasn't even brushed it off his nose.

Please, any tips or suggestions?

Or conversely, would it be technically healthy to allow the pacman to eat crickets exclusively for the rest of its life?

Seems like eventually they will be too small to efficiently sustain him, his mouth could probably fit 5 at a time right now...

Feeding just crickets can be done, but only if they are dusted with vitamin and mineral supplements once every one to two weeks. My advice would be to try a larger mouse, at three inches, your pacman should is just a little smaller than mine and should be able to handle at least fuzzy mice if not hoppers (1-1.5" mice). I would buy frozen and thaw them amd try to feed with tongs. my pacman won't eat fish either and wouldn't take anything form tongs until i showed him a fat 2" mouse that he promptly devowered. Forcep feeding takes time and lots of patience, but is definatly worth it if it works, mainly for the health of your animal, I can forcep almst everyone of my amphibians, with the exception of the three species of Rana's and the smokey jungles.
hope this is useful.

Thanks! Hey GREAT news. So I bought a small goldfish (well the largest they had, but it was still pretty small) and placed it in the water bowl. Then i coaxed the Pacman away from his little ditch into the water bowl. He wasn't happy about this, and promptly turned away from the fish to get out. I used the side of my thumb and forefinger to gently nudge him around to face the fish, and he snapped at me! I thought this was great, because he'd never snapped at anything much less my hand. So i took tongs and grabbed the fish. The Pacman hopped out and made his way back to the ditch. On the way, I put the fish right up against his nose. Nothing. I tried placing it in front of him and letting it flop around, but still nothing. Then I picked it up again and nudged it against his nose, at which point he snapped at it. when i saw him opening his mouth, I put the fish in it. he clamped down, paused for a long while (i guess he was confused that it tasted so good) and then he slurped it up. So that's his first fish, and I hope to try a hopper tomorrow. He grew really fast, he's 3" long now, 2" or so wide.
