frozen/thawed

joshnuber Jan 18, 2006 04:20 PM

I am just looking for some suggestions to help in switching my male green burmese from live rats to frozen/thawed. He has eaten them before but only when he has not eaten in several weeks. i usually thaw them out for a few hours and then warm them under a heat lamp. any suggestions would be appreciated. He eats as many live as I give him and is about 7 months old. I am thinking to try and switch him to thawed rabbits and see if he takes to that better. thanks for any help.

First off, a 7 month old burm is probably too small to eat a rabbit.
You've got a couple of months yet. Maybe if you could find very small rabbits, or rabbit "pinks".
For switching over to frozen thawed the answer is patience.
Do not give up!
Start with maybe feeding your pre killed, then follow up with frozen thawed.
Once the feeding instinct is turned on, your burm should take the frozen thawed.
Most times, I just feed frozen thawed without a lead in.
I tease the snake using very long tongs, and usually they've always struck and fed.
In time I just place the prey item in the cage, and they eat at their leisure.
If they dont take the prey the first night...no food until the next feeding.
And so on. Burms can go a pretty long time without eating, as can most snakes.
Some can be pretty fussy over how their f/t is served.
I have one male that will only take microwaved rabbits or rats.
Something I am usually VERY CAREFUL doing. ( I have settings on mine that go from 10%-100% power )Others could care less how they're fed.
Be consistent, be patient, and you will be rewarded.

YEAH! Well he must have enjoyed the rabbit scent much more than rats because I introduced a frozen thawed 1.5 pd rabbit to him and he gobbled it up...Hopefully a successful switch!!

WOW...not bad for 7 months!
Just remember...never go back to live or p/k now.

yeah. he's growing like a weed. I've had him since he was an egg because my uncle has a pair or breeding burms and he let me have him...I don't powerfeed him either. He eats one large rat a week...well, now he will be getting a small rabbit every two weeks..
