First baby of the season...

Lucien Jan 19, 2006 02:57 AM

And a huge sigh of relief. I'm going to be innundated this year compared to the last 3 of losing all my eggs save one or 2... I've got 10 still in the incubator... 6 possible blazing blizzards getting ready to hatch... 4 others mostly albino and het albinos... but this little baby tells me I'm doing something better this year. That the changes I made are taking effect. I switched from perlite back to a very fine vermiculite... just moist enough to be slightly damp all the way through.. and put my hovabator on a dimmer switch.. that kept the temps mostly steady and from spiking too high... or dropping too low. This is most probably a female but... length of incubation time says so.. but I'll hold out until I can be sure just cause I like the name for him/her...

What a cutie, congrats !!! I don't understand the statement about it probably being female do to the length of time it took to hatch? I always thought it was simply the incubation temps that mattered. I hatched 6 females last year, they hatched anywhere from 45-59 days. I started them all around 81 degrees for the 1st couple of weeks then bumped up temps on the ones that hatched faster.

Since I don't like messing with my temps, a longer incubation period means a lower temperature and therefore more possibility of being female. There's a lot of reasons I dislike toying with temps.. I've had a great majority of my eggs for the past 2 years die from changes in temps and humidity. I lost over 30 eggs last year to one temp spike... that were halfway through incubation. With the adjustment of temps also comes a higher risk of birth defects and other problems.. I just don't agree with the practice.. Not to say its wrong or others shouldn't do it.. just my take on it. What few I did have hatch in the last 2 years, hatched at 45 days.. and were all male save 1... and I believed that one to be male as well until it was 6 months old. It was showing the bulges at 3 months but not the pores.. at 6 months those bulges disappeared.. *shrugs* But this year is much better.. I've changed a few things including incubation medium and have 9 more eggs on their way to hatching as we speak.. Next year I should have around 70 eggs altogether and hopefully as many babies. I've got Blazing Blizzard eggs in the incubator at the moment from my own created Dbl. hets.. If temps aren't played with.. female incubation takes longer than male.. which is why I stated what I did.

Ok, I see what you are saying. I only bumped up my temps a couple of degrees, the highest I ever had them was 85 degrees. I incubated at 81 degrees for 2-3 weeks (for female of course), then slowly moved the temps up a couple of degrees over a weeks period. I don't think going from 81 to 85 is that drastic anyway. I didn't have any problems. I'm sure 4 are female, the other 2 are so far still looking female LOL. I also use vermiculite as my substrate. I only had 8 eggs, from a 1st time breeding female. The 1st & 2nd clutches both eggs hatched, the 3rd & 4th clutches 1 egg was fertile & 1 egg wasn't in both clutches. So I ended up with 6 out of 8 eggs hatching. All healthly and doing great

Good luck with your eggs this year, can't wait to see pics of your future babies !!!
