Texas Coral Snakes

mssdds Jan 19, 2006 03:59 AM

Just out of curiosity, what is the farthest west that anyone has captured a coral snake along U.S. 90? maybe langtry??? I've heard of a rumored catch on black gap.

On FM 189 (the cut across road from 277 to Juno) just before you make the turn onto Juno road. I am sure this in not the most western catch but worth noting. I wanted it to be an Annulata so bad. I picked up the tail before I realized what it was... Lucky for me it was mellow. Only my 3rd year out west and my first coral out west. I have seen many other dor's on 277 over the years.

Back around '77, I picked up a coral under some railroad ties around Shumla(are those derelict buildings still there?)I believe this is about 7-8 miles east of Langtry.? I too thought it was an annulata at first but recognized it before I picked it up.
Best....

I caught a coral snake a few cuts West of Langtry about 8 years back. I also found a huge one D.O.R. on the South end of Juno Rd. back in 1983. The snake has almost no black flecking in it and was amazingly clean. I wish I would have picked him up and preserved him. Texas Corals do not exist in the Big Bend region or too much past Langtry, unless some one has released some.

Texas Corals are known for the cuts east of Sanderson on highway 90. AFAIK that is the furthest west they have been documented.

Hey Joe...
You are right in regards to how far west Corals range...
They have also been recorded (verified records) in northeastern Pecos, Upton (King Mountain area) and Schleicher (south of Eldorado).
Looking forward to your IHS talk... will it be just Rancho animals or will you be delving into the whole "mexicana" complex throughout other parts of that great Mexican state?

Happy herpin'...

I know that they've been found east of Sanderson on 90, but I'm not sure that they've actually been documented either with a voucher specimen or photo voucher.

...with Brett Nelson a few years back. I left the spotlight turned on laying on the driver's seat when he asked for help catching the snake and I ended up catching the seat on fire! lol This after I had been hounding Brett for days about leaving his light on every time he left the cab of the truck...and then I'm the one burning the hole in the seat. Had to get a seat cover after that

Anybody else set a seat on fire with a spotlight?
