Can anyone recommend "accurate" thermometers for my incubator

JDalbo Jan 19, 2006 05:23 AM

I'm finishing up my "wine cooler" incubabator and need to pick up a few thermometers to monitor temperatures. I'm wondering which kinds of people are pleased with? I would prefer ones that read in tenths of a degree, just for accuracy. Thanks, Joe

get some digital Min/Max thermos, and just run the probe inside the incubator. any digital readout thermo is going to have trouble eventually with the high humidity ruining the screen (if left inside the incubator) and analog dial thermos can be quite inaccurate.

with a digital Min/Max, your readout can be outside the incubator, allowing you to monitor interior temps without opening the box.

keep in mind that probe position (for either your thermometer or thermostat) can affect temp reading. the temp inside egg boxes is often different than the general air temp of the incubator. the temp to be concerned about is the temp that the eggs sit at : )

if you really want accuracy in "tenths" of a degree, check these out.

The type of meter in the link would be good to check your other thermometers. Every box of eggs needs it's own thermometer, and often they will vary a little. If you check them all with a good meter you would know which ones are off and in what direction.

But then, if you're looking for something to stay inside the incubator... I'm not sure. The temp gun is very accurate, and the digital indoor/outdoor thermometers are pretty close.

You have to OPEN the damn incubator to get the temperature! Thus SKEWING the results EVERY time!

Like Robyn said, use the probe on a simple min/max (indoor/outdoor) thermometer.

It seems though, many thermometers give different readings. I have 2 dual probe thermometers on my chondro cages and if i stick all 4 probes together they all read different (Within 1 1/2 degrees). How do I determine which probe is accurate?

many thermometers are spec'd at /- 2 degrees, so that is within the norm.
