Question about transition

Kingofspades Jan 19, 2006 05:51 AM

At the moment, Eve, my 225 gram female eats 2 mice a week.
I was thinking of switching her over to f/t rats.

What size rats do you think she'd be able to take?

Should I go with pups or fuzzies?

Last year my buddy had his first clutch of balls ever hatch. As I was breeding my own rats, he started his balls off on rat pups, their first meal was a 1-3 day old pup. So why would a 225 grm ball need pups? Wouldn't a ball that big be better off on fuzzy's? Was it wrong to start his off on pups? they are doing good now, I think the biggest female he has is around 450 grms.

When I hatch out my first clutch, I was going to start them off on rat pups too, is it a bad idea? if so why?

1-3 days old is considered a pinkie not a pup a pup is 2-3 weeks old, about 20-30 grams and perfect for a 200-300 gram snake.

"a pup is 2-3 weeks old"

Thats just another reason why I hate to buy my food. When my rats get 2-3 weeks old I think of them as fuzzy's, not a pup cause they have hair, and the eyes are starting to open.

Last time I went to the store to buy snake food, and it's been a while, when I asked for pups they brought out some pinkys(no/little hair) So I asked for fuzzy's and they brought out the right size, just a little bigger then an adult mouse.

I just checked rodent pro's site and I guess what they call weaned, I've been calling fuzzy's.

I guess I had my term's wrong.

Well in my opinion rat pups are of compable size to an adult mouse but the rat pups contain baby fat which will increase the weight of your bp and i have been told that rat pup bones are easyer to digest for your snake. I have also been told that the rat pups have more nutriants compared to adult mice.
