Are Jungle Carpet Pythons freindly?

quackzilla Jan 19, 2006 10:41 AM

I am considering buying one, an adult, and I want to know if it can be handled for a prolonged period of time (30 mins?) or daily (except when shedding or after feeding, of course).

I heard that they can be a bit nippy at first but calm down if you handle them a lot. I don't mind bites, they can't hurt more than those of my hyperactive dog.

I think EVERY python as a youngster is nippy- it's a defensive reaction.

However, everything I've read, and every jungle I've seen has had a very nice temperment, and seem to actually enjoy being handled. Some of them are a bit cage defensive, but calm down nicely once out.

The hard part is peeling them off your arm they've claimed as their own personal, heated perch!

Thanks for the help!

With a couple exceptions, I always have a glove on one hand, but pick my animals up with the bare one....just in case they're having a bad day.

How big of a terrarium should I gey, and should it be plexiglass, glass, or something else?

If concidering an adult find out how it was treated as a baby, if it was handled a lot as a baby chances are it probly has a good temper. my jungle is currently a year old and was nippy when i got her, but that went away after about a month. expierence i have with adults is they are nice if they are handled regularly. i currently have mine in a 70 gallon tall glass terrarium but for an adult i would look into a vision cage.

Front accessibility for cleaning is highly desirable, as opposed to a tank. Better for air circulation, too.
