In 2000 Mexico issued CITES export permits for 8 live, wild caught alvarezi for scientific purposes. In 2003 they issued CITES export permits for 4 live, wild caught specimens for scientific purposes. I know they were issued for export to the US but I'm not sure who has them. For legitimate research purposes one can get the necessary permits, research, live collection and export. The process takes a few months, requires working through a Mexican university, a lot of very detailed paperwork (in both english and spanish) and around US$800 depending on the current exchange rate but the process isn't overly complicated just time consuming to weed out those who are just trying to get animals.

Thanks for the response. Any idea what the research is about? I saw a couple of articles about collecting venom for diabetes research and wonder if they are checking differences in species. I am intereseted in Alvarezi if any body out there has a legal breeding pair or colony in the US or if it is ever possible to obtain legal ones from Mexico. Again thanks and any additional information is appreciated written of photo. TDK27@charter.net
