Hog Island X Argentine---How big will it get?

TacomaUte Jan 19, 2006 03:35 PM

I just picked up this guy a couple weeks ago. I understand Hogs usually only get about 5 feet while Argentines can go 10' or more. Would the fact that it's half Hog Island limit its growth or would it have the potential to grow as large as a pure Argentine?

Thanks

The answer is this:

Your Hogg X Argentine will be intermediate between the two, unless it shows hybrid vigour to the point that it surpasses one or the other, but this is very unlikely.

The "rule" seems to be that when you cross two lines the F1 offspring will fall somewhere in between the two parents, but will not surpass them, but like I mentioned above in cases of extreme crosses (horse X donkey)where heterosis is highest, the children can surpass the parents at times, perfect example being a Mule can be larger than a horse, but not smaller than a donkey.

Hope this helps,
Dan
