Olives Breeding!

andrewhare Jan 19, 2006 04:12 PM

WooooooooooHoooooooooooooooooooo! I feel like I have almost willed these to breed, lol. They have been courting off and on for about a month but I hadn't seen copulation. I had read that they breed in the dry season in their native Australia so I hadn't sprayed them down like many of my other projects. I figured, "why not" today and gave them a spray this morning. After I sprayed them down it was the male literally perked up and made a V-line for the female. It was almost like he said "oh yeah, thats what I'm talking about". Quite amazing to see. So much for the literature, this boy likes it wet! Anyway, heres to hoping!

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!!! Very nice.

Hopefully in the very near future, you'll have a butt-load of these little guys running around!!!

Best of luck to you, man!

The baby pic is cool.... Hope to have some. Mine copulated a lot last year, that seems to be common. Getting the female to ovulate has been much harder for breeders. I got lucky this year (or it ws the cooling down), but we shall see when the eggs are laid.

Evidently with olives, copulation and maybe even ovulation aren't sure fire signs of eggs on the way! Here are some pics of what I believe is the same pair of snakes the original poster showed. These are, of course, back when I had them. Like I told him in an e-mail the other day, every time I think about selling these snakes, I kick myself in the arse over, and over, and over.... Anyway, when these pictures were taken, the snakes were around 5 to 6 years old. Dave Barker swears by olives needing to be 7 or so before they usually lay their first successful clutch, in addition to being sure the female isn't too hefty, so I guess I just wasn't patient enough for them. Hopefully Andrew will have more luck with them than I did.

Doing the deed - which they did surprisingly often, the male was always up for it (too bad he always had to 'mess' on her while they were at it)!

Then, over a month later, I caught this, which I assumed was ovulation. She hadn't eaten in about two months or more and suddenly it looked like she had a good meal in her. Admittedly, I've yet to breed any pythons successfully, so I could have been wrong here.

Thanks everyone!

Copulations certainly don't guarntee anything, as I stated in my original post, "here is to hoping" and this pair has not ovulated to this point. If one truly witnesses an actual "ovulation" they will get eggs. Whether they will be good or not is something else, but something will be deposited. Follicles can be reabsorbed and that is most likely what Chance witnessed with this same pair last season. Just to clarify, this pair has not ovulated to this point.

On another note, I never received an e-mail from you Chance. My new e-mail is ahmorelia@yahoo.com.

I have a few pairs of these and had two of them lay eggs last year. The first was quite old (approx. 13 years) and wound up becoming egg-bound, but the other was only 3 or 4 (2001 hatchling). Both clutches were laid in late April / early May, so they bred sometime in late January I think.

I hope good luck to those of you breeding these wonderful animals. I believe, in my experience, it comes down to persistence and patience.

Mine started early this year, and since the female was always a lot heavier than either male (2 were used in breeding), I wasn't positive. I did notice a swelling this year after a minor (temp-wise, but month-long) cooling period. One a trip to the reptile vet for a different reason, I took her along. He said she felt pregnant, and in his opinion, was. 3 weeks later, on a return trip, I had her x-rayed, which confimed ovum a lot further down than would have been for ovulation. Other behavior patterns consistant with being knocked up were there. So....we shall see. No pre-egglaying shed yet.

"too bad he always had to 'mess' on her while they were at it)!" What is it with that, lol?! Boy, are they messy....lol Both my males get this white covering on their lower back. Premature ejaculation in pythons????
