I came here to ask a question myself but read this post. I keep plants in my Ca kings tank. Since tank is large enough it looks good.
I have found that plants directly in substrate is bad it gets mold-just overall doesnt work out as you want dry substrate not moist for your snake.
However in small pots it works great . I like the ceramic pots as they look nice . Any plant the doesnt require much water is great. I like non prickly cactuses but so many plants to pick from.
ofcourse you need light for them and this is no big deal as my snake hides during the day and active at night. My tanks use screen tops so lighting is easy.
I know you rather plant directly in the tank but I found this to be a mess unless its with small snakes like ringnecks, garters and even than to wet the substrate for the plants equals problems for the snake.
Pots make it so easy and you can bury them(I dont) or hide them behind rocks, wood. I remove the pots and water the plants outside the tank once a week and cavtuses only take a bit of water .
You can pretty much keep any plant but only in pots the tank will foul if you plant in substrate .
