Good news on Spot

Kendergirl Jan 19, 2006 07:16 PM

Spot's looking a bit better today. We've still got a long way to go before I can say he's healthy, BUT the mucus has cleared up enough that he can use his tongue properly again. It made me want to jump for joy when I saw him do it the first time today! It seems like the Amikacin (and heat) is doing it's job.

Tomorrow will be fun...I get to give him another shot. Yipee. Wish me luck, I'm a bit nervous.

Amikacin is very hard on their liver and kidneys. Keep him well hydrated or you'll have problems down the road with organ failure. I'd put him in enough water that he can soak but so that he can rest his head on his body and not drown. So, for a ball that is in around 100 grams you are probably looking at about 1/2 to 3/4" of water.

IMHO a safer drug that works just as well if not better is Fortaz (Ceftazidime). Although, most vets don't want to perscribe this medication as it isn't in their reptile manual (the medical reptile "bible" of diseases). Most want to use injectable Baytril or Amikacin.

Good luck with your little guy.
Regards,
Corey
