Is my Pixie fine?

Grunngg Jan 19, 2006 07:21 PM

I moved him 2 nights ago into a new larger home. He's now in a 20gal long. As far as substrate, I have about 2 inches of reptibark with another 2 inches of BedABeast on top. I figured I dont have to worry as much if he swallows some bedabeast, and i have the reptibark in there just so its a little deeper for my frog to burrow down in. I also added a small 50watt heat bulb, just to help with keeping the temp up a bit.

My problem is, for the last 2 days my Pixie hasnt left his hide. He used to come out and soak in his dish every day. I havent seen him come out yet. He's moved around a bit in his hide though.

I'm thinking maybe its because he's a room with higher traffic. He's in the living room now. Do you think the extra noise is making him scared? Should I move my frog back into my bedroom?

to me your pixie just needs to get used to his new home take him out of his hide and put him in the water dish and leave him he should get used to it.

I didn't take the hide out, but I moved it away from him. Also I fed him his first pinkie, he seemed to love it. Anyway, he's much more active now. He still spends a lot of time in his hide but he'll come out for a bit. He still hasn't gone to his dish to soak though. It's on the other side of the tank. Should I move it closer, or is he just getting enough moisture from the substrate? I haven't been letting the coconut fiber dry out.

I'll try that. I just get nervous when I try to handle my Pixie. I know youre supposed to pick him up by his lower half. But when he puffs himself up with air his skin feels really delicate. I worry i'd damage him.

Thanks. I never really wanted to pick him up. I know frogs skin is delicate and and they can get stressed when theyre handled. I successfully picked him up and put him in his dish. He sat there for a minute but jumped out when I went to put the top back on his cage. Do you think I should move him back tomorrow?
Also, i've been keeping the BedABeast pretty moist and not letting it dry out. Is that right? Or should it dry more? I have a screen lid, so theres a lot of ventilation, I don't think mold will become a problem. Thanks a lot for answering my questions. I really appreciate it.

I think you're right. My frog has seemed like it's been moving about more. Usually burying its self in random spot. I had a scare tonight. I went to mist the tank and turn off the heat lamp and couldnt find my Pixie anywhere. So i poked around the cage until I poked this one spot and the substrate kinda pushed back up. It was funny. I didnt expect it to be completely burried like that.
Anyways, thanks again for your help. Im thinking about getting a low, maybe 50 watt night bulb to help with temperature.
