Leopard gecko fungus

tross Jan 19, 2006 10:38 PM

My son has 2 leopard geckos and hasn't had them for long. One is an albino and is doing great. The other one has some sort of fungus on her feet which is causing her toes to fall off. She has lost 3 already. When she sheds, the skin is shed from her whole body but seems to get stuck on her toes. I guess that led to the fungus but now we don't know what to do for her. Help! I don't know any herpetologists in my area.

Give her a nice warm soak. Fill a container with warm water so that her legs are covered, then place the tope on and let her soak for about 15-20 min. Considering how bad her feet are you may need to soak her a few times. Between each soak try to gently rub off the shed skin with a q-tip. One thing I've found with toes, is you can use a tooth pick. What I do is a put thier foot on my finger, then a I trap the shed skin between my finger and the tooth pick. The gecko will pull their foot and remove the shed. This works great for inbetween the toes, where you really can't get a q-tip. Try not to let her dry out too much between soaks as it will just set you back some.

I hope this helps.

They have this stuff at petco that is called Shed Aid, i forgot the brand. All you do is spray it on her toes and wait about 60 seconds. then it sould soften and you can delicatly pull it off. be carefull though because they do fall off easily. Unfortunatly I have had that happen. I have tried the worm baths or soaks but this Shed Aid is more then twice as effective. They probably have it at petsmart aswell. Its arround 5-10 dollars. I hope this helps.

Now that they've told you how to remove the dead skin, I guess it should be mentioned, that it isn't fungus on the toes, but dried up shed that was never removed. Do you have a humid hide for your Leos? If not you really should add one, they can be invaluable especially when your Leos are shedding. If you don't know what a humid hide is or how to quickly/cheaply make one here's some simple instructions:

LOL....Shelly, I knew I was forgetting something. Yes Humid Hide Is MUST!

Also, I have never used the Shed Aide, but I've heard it does work, but may be pest to soak the gecko in warm water after you get the shed off to clean off the Shed Aid. It may say it's safe for reptiles, but I still wouldn't want my gecko to lick that stuff off it's feet. Better to be safe than sorry.

don't forget the Neosporin after!

any toes that are already black are gone, they will fall off with the next shed or two. any that are still pink can be saved. You need to check all their toes after a shed, and def add the humid hide.

saline solution for infants. The stuff at the grocery store that you put a drop in a newborns nose and they blow more snot than a saint bernard. Soak for a bit. Sit watch the television for a bit and hold their little hand in a napkin or sponge soaked with it and let it soften dead skin is resiliant and the more you soak the easier it comes off. Also that saline for piercings works well. Kinda like purified sea water. The salts from the saline won't hurt either in these short soaks as the leos skin is desighned to not be mineral (such as salt) absorbic since they crawl around in mineral dust all day.
