Ok sorry, here is a little ranting....kind of long

tsusnakeguy Jan 20, 2006 10:19 AM

Ok, in the short time I have been in this hobby I have noticed many things and I just figured its about time I said them out loud. I have come to find that this is a great hobby and passion for me and many other people but it is starting to get out of hand. There are many many people that collect snakes because they love them. They love the colors, the morphs, the size, whatever it is that you like. At the same time while collecting animals that you love, you can also make some money doing it, and that is fine, great even. But there is one problem that is growing. More people are getting into this "hobby", not for personal enjoyment of the animals but for just monitary reasons. There are people that are looking just for certain morphs because they will make them tons of quick money and they will go about it any way they see fit. This means no regards to the saftey of the animal, be it by power feeding or providing insufficient living quarters. Don't get me wrong, I am all for breeding and getting these morphs that are out there. Now the prices of them are a totally a different story and that has been debated before and I will not bring that back up. But I feel it is ruining the hobby as a whole to have these people out there that are just in it for the money and the snakes mean nothing to them other than $$$.

Now these people are ruining it for others that are trying to get into the hobby. Because everytime a new person post on these boards about a snake they got, there will be atleast one person out of 10 that will reply to it and say how they made a mistake and should research it better and do this and that. This comes from so many other people that have gotten into this hobby for other reasons than the pleasure of snakes and then new people have to suffer because of others mistakes. I understand there are also those folks that get snakes because of the shock value, and i disagree with them also but I am going to leave that alone.

Really what I am trying to get across is please if you have a snake no matter what type, enjoy it for what it is, not what it can do for you and how you can make money off it. Also please can we stop the hateful replies and attacks on people. These boards are for help and if people keep getting attacked by others, and i dont just mean the random person is attacking folks, it is sometimes the big names that do it to. But if this continues, then less people will come to these boards and they will become very boring and I have seen that on other message boards as well.

Please be kind to everyone, this is like a large family, yea there are some screw ups, but most of us are here because we love these animals, so lets help each other if there is a problem

Sorry for the long post.

The negatives that you point out will always be there...In this hobby as well as most others. All we can do is the best WE can do. Avoid the negative people as much as possible & try not to let them get us down. And educate whenever we can. The world will always have @$$#01es...All we can do is TRY not to be one of them. ENjoy! you made a bunch of good points, i know what you mean.
i have seen on some of the other boards, cases to where if you dont have a certain morph, you dont get a reply.... or your reply has to be one that causes you to "deserve" to get flamed.
i lurk around on the boards.
i have seen some boards as to where you ask a specific question like "i am seting this animals eviroment up correctly" and the response you get is "go to yahoo and type in that animal then figure it out" you have done this and got 3 different suggestions, that was the point of asking the question.... i have even seen people reply "i get so tired of the same general questions"
then you post something like "help...... my animal seems weak, and its 2 am and the er vet doesnt see this type of animal, what should i do" then you are told how stupid you are for getting an animal that a vet wont see.
it gets really frusterating and just about makes you want to quit coming to the boards.

90% of the everyday problems are caused by the wrong tone of voice. (Or in this case by the tone of the message in response)

I agree that there is a lot of bashing. I too am getting into the breeding of corns. I think these are the best snakes anywhere to keep as pets. I am currently trying to acquire the more "high end" morphs as well. Yes I do hope to make some $$ but only expect to make enough to support my hobby. All money I make is put right back into my animals to ensure optimum housing, meals, etc. I can do this best by raising the more expensive morphs. I don't know about others but when you spend more $$ you tend to pay more attention to the details of husbandry. If the snakes arn't cared for properly then you don't get the breeding results you want. There are those who feel that "normals" are disposable but if it wasn't for the normals then we would not have any of the other morphs either. All of my snakes, wether they are norms or ultramels, or butter motleys etc. are treated as pets first and investments last. I think some people lose site of this in there haste to make $$$. Lets all try to keep in perspective that these are all living animals and they all need the same care and attention regardless of price tag.

I haven't read the other posts yet so I might just be repeating what everyone else is saying.
But, there is no need to worry about people just getting into cornsnakes to make money. I won't happen.
Yes, you can make a little money and it can pay for itself but to actually make a living, and a prosperous living at that, takes years in the business and you have to be at the cutting edge so to speak. You have to be able to create and produce morphs before anyone else, or find a special nitche that has interest in the hobby but isn't bred by hundreds of breeders. These things are extremely hard to accomplish.
Someone who thinks they can just jump in and buy some high end morphs and start making money are going to be sorry.
By the time it is available on the "open" market there are already several breeders creating that same morph. Now you add a few years to grow, breed and produce this morph and there are already that many more people doing the same thing. Prices will be falling.
So, although there are people jumping in and thinking they are going to make quick "bucks" it isn't going to happen and the ones that continue breeding will be the ones doing it out of a true interest in the hobby and not out for the quick money.
