Leopard Gecko Question from a Ball Python Family

toshamc Jan 20, 2006 01:24 PM

We are getting my son a pair of leopard geckos for his birthday - I know he wants a blazing blizzard and we figured we would get another one (a bright colored one to contrast) to keep with it.

My question is I've been looking at breeder pages and the usual web site classifieds and I've seen the blazing blizards going for anywhere between $35 to $150. I know there can be a slight price difference in balls depending on the stock, quality, sex and breeder - but comparitively this seems like a big gap. What am I missing? These are only going to be pets we don't intend on breeding.

Can anyone give me a couple of pointers at what the difference may be and what to look for, maybe a breeder that has quality stock. Maybe a suggestion on the bright colored companion.

Thanks!

ohnestly, I have noticed the same thing. It all depends on the seller. I have seen nice geckos priced for cheap and I have seen not so nice geckos way over priced. If they are just going to be pets I have had luck at petstores, but i don't recomend it unless they are specificly reptiles. Also H.I.S.S. has some VERY nice geckos for Good prices. but thats just my opinion. I have paid $500 for some of mine and $10 for others. Also try HotGeckos they are bothe listed on kingsnake. I don't know if they have any blizards but they have some high colored ones. I have done business with hotgeckos and they were GREAT!

Some are 400 if yuo get a las vegas blazing, but where are you finding them for 35? The lowesi ive seen was 150 for a pair and that was because one was 100 and second animal was 1/2 off

I've never seen a blazing blizzard for any where near $35.00. Maybe it was a Normal leo that was being listed as "Het" for blazing blizzard? Or a better guess is, it really wasn't a blazing blizzard? Anyway, I truly feel you generally get what you pay for. Leos online are in most cases more expensive than your local petstore, for many reasons. They will be healthier, they have been well fed & supplemented (not just thrown a few cricket & mealworms that haven't even been gutloaded) and the genetics in most cases will be much better.

thing is you can find some stock cheaper but are you breeding or taking pets. Pets, yep go cheap for a looker. Breeding look at back ground. Blizzards made again and again through hets seem to darken. Blizzards you se that can be traced pretty much het free back close to the beginning seem to remain whiter. Blizzard being a recessed pigment more than a mutation because of loss of pigment has variation due with het intervention. After all science says 50/50.

the first place i go to is crestedgecko.com he has some blazing projects but i think the only one i saw there was $400 (adult las vegas male)...he has awesome animals. He may have something your looking for if you check him out. I have received nothing less than perfect..unless i specifically asked for it lol. He has great bloodlines and really takes care of his pets. I would honestly recommend starting off with something a little cheaper if you dont have experience because gecko's can be a handful if they get sick. Either way i hope your search goes well.

just tell him edward sent you if you contact him lol
