Where to get small quantities of pinkies?

tc_legacy Jan 20, 2006 04:40 PM

Hi,

I've wanted a corn snake for awhile and am gathering needed supplies now with the hope of purchasing a baby corn asap!

I was just wondering about where I should purchase pinkies.. Most places online seem to sell a minimum of 50 or 100! If I want them in smaller quantities do I need to buy from a pet store?

Also, I have an off (the above) topic question.. One caresheet I read recommended a basking lamp to provide a warm spot but I was planning on using an UTH, which other sources said was fine. Is that okay?

Where do you live??? There may be a member of a local herp club who you can go in with for an order. If that doesn't work a pet store may be your only outlet. Also vendors often show up at expos with mice for sale. It all depends on where you live. Good luck!

I've been in bed a lot too. I had a pretty bad car wreck Wednesday night. I T-boned some idiot at 50 mph who pulled out in front of me. I was only going to have that car 2 more days too! Well at least now he gets to pay me to fix up my camaro and nobody was seriously hurt. WEAR YOUR SEATBELT! I walked away without a scratch but my sister hit her head on the windshield because she wasn't wearing her belt. My 1 year old nephew also cut his face on his car seat. Everyone is relatively alright though.

Sounds like you've had a rough go of it over that last couple of weeks.
Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery.
Take it easy and don't rush.
Get better

if you get a baby you'll need quiet a few pinkies to feed it as it grow, so 100 might not be too many. as to the heat depends on your personal preference. my corns are in a rack so anything but flexwatt would be hard. one of my boas had a radiant heat panel, whick i feel is the best hands down, and the other i stated with a uth but quickly switched to a heat bulb. corns are pretty much very easy to care for so as long as temps are stable and warm enough they'll be alright.
depending on the cage i would recommend a radiant heat panel, if a rack then a uth or flexwatt. either way will be fine as i said its just personal preference.

Do you have a PetCo near you?
PetCo sells Mice-On-Ice but they are pretty expensive ($10.00 for 6) but they also sell rodents from Gourmet Rodents.
They will usually have bags of varius sizes, pinkies, fuzzies and adults, that you can buy any quantity from one on up.
They average about $1.30 each, I believe.
I would personally recommend ordering 50 on-line.
As the snake grows you can move from one at a feeding to two or even three if neccessary until it is time to move to fuzzies.
You would be surprised how quickly you could use 50 pinkies.

check out bayourodents.com, even with shipping costs, 100 pinkies are less than $100. You'll use thten soon enough and 100 pinkies from the pet store will be more than $100, plus you wont have to go back to the store every couple of weeks to get them. I'd say buy 50 pinks and 25 fuzzies, they will keep fine in the freezer. Just give an example, I bought 100 pinks, 50 fuzzy, 25 rat pups, and 25 small rats. All for $107.00. This was with shipping included. The rodents were 72.55 before shipping costs and they come vaccum packed as well. You wont this kind of deal anywhere else.
Have fun and watch you grab out of the freezer for dinner
