DIY Cage

veiledbrian Jan 20, 2006 06:09 PM

Hey guys,

I've been wanting to build my own cage for some time now. Just the other day I got tired of waiting around to do and went out and bought the materials. I haven't finish the cage yet as of now. I still need to sew the screen together etc. I went with a pvc structure. I was able to purchase pvc furniture pipe at ace hardware for 1.99 per 5ft pole. I built the entire structure, 5'x2.5'x2.5', for around 24 dollars. It is around the size, a bit shorter and a bit wider, than the reptarium 260 gal. The screen I went with was a plastic coated pet screen identical to that used on reptariums. I bought 26'x3' for 45 dollars. I'm using velcro instead of a zipper. That cost me 15 dollars for 15 ft. I plan on making the 'door' completely removable for ease of use. Basically I built a 260 gal enclosure for around 95 to 100 dollars. I didn't want to go with wood because of possible rotting and weight issues. And i went with the pet screen because it will be an indoor cage for half the year and it would be easier to take apart. Here is a pic of what i've got done so far.

how does the screen hold up to heat? i've always wanted to build my own enclosure, but i worry that most screens aren't designed to be heat resistant. i have my female veiled, Yema, in a 100 gal. reptarium. i have it set up nice, and it's sufficient, but the zipper is a pain and i've seen much nicer setups pictured.

I used to make cages out of the pet screen, and have 100wt. bulbs on top of them and nothing happened to the screen. Although it is only plastic and it is definetly a possiblility. Reptariums are great for some people cause they are very cheap, come in many sizes and are easy to clean. I have had many with the zipper running smooth as a whisle, and others which I had major problems with.... Keeping chameleons is the most fun part, but all the little projects that go alng with it are also fun, i.e. DIY cages, breeding feeder insects, designing the right enviorment for the chameleons, growing your own plants, ect.
