I need some advice...

fox_gurl_3 Jan 20, 2006 07:48 PM

Ok my leo laid 2 eggs this morning and I cant get them to a incubator until tomorrow. So what should I do with them for now? Because right now I have them in a container with a lid and some moss and I misted it with water and I have it sitting under a heat light. Will that work?

You want to make sure the temps don't fluctuate. Check what the temp is around the container. Then before moving the container into the incubator make sure the temps are the same. This can take up to 12 hours to get just right.

The moss may cause mold or be too moist. Switch over to vermiculite ASAP. Add water to vermiculite then squeeze into a ball and squeeze untill there is no more water coming out. Fill container 2/3 with the moist vermiculite. Make an indent with your finger for each egg to go into, then fill the holes in around the eggs.

VERY IMPORTANT! Do not allow the eggs to change position. Mark the top of the eggs so that you know which side is up. If you allow them to turn over and they are not returned the embryo can drown.

Well I dont have any vermiculite right now but thats what they will be on when they are put into the incubator. So do you think that will be fine until I get them in a incubator hopefully tomorrow? Oh also she laid them right next to eachother and so they are kind of stuck together I may be able to seperate them but I dont want it to hurt either of the eggs. What do you think I should do about that? Yeah Im 99% sure I have them the same sides up they were after she laid them.

You can leave them together if you wish. I've always been worried about leaving them stuck together for the whole time they incubate. To seperate, take a wet q-tip and run it around the area stuck together and very slowly seperate. Keep wetting it witht he q-tip till they are seprate.

They should be fine in the moss for tonight. If for any reason they start to change, mold, dent, etc. Post back and let us know what they look like and many of us can help give you instructions to correct it.

Ok I will have to try that. Yeah they are starting to dent a little I figured it was from the heat so I moved the down from the heat light more so they werent so close. Do you think that will help or is there something else I should do? Although I dont think my Bearded Dragon likes it much because I have them in his cage with him but he can live with it until tomorrow. Heres a picture I took of them so you can see how they look right now and so you can see the dent.

Sorry I had to work all day, so I didn't get a chance to get back in here.

Did they plump back up when you put them into the vermiculite? If not, try a damp paper towel over them. This should help. The one of the right looks a little pinkish inside. This is a good sign.

Keep me posted on how they are doing.
