holbrooki

phiber_optikx Jan 21, 2006 02:05 AM

Just out of curiosity, what other species of king would you compare holbrooki with attitude and feeding wise? Are they known to be docile or hellraisers? Good eaters? Thanks.

My holbrooki remind me of my nigra. The holbrooki i have are L.Lemke line Louisiana speckleds from Isis Reptiles, they are super easy to feed and act very domesticated, try em,you'll like em,lol!

I found out the holbrookis in the herp shop that I'm interested in are also from the Lemke line out of Isis reptiles. Turns out Isis Reptiles is not that far from me. I'm in Chatsworth and Isis is in Ventura. I'm wondering if I can pick up one or a pair directly from the breeder.

I've heard that the wild-caught ones can be pretty aggressive. I caught one last August. Generally, he was okay to hold, but if he didn't like something, he'd take a bite on my arm or hand. I let him go, so I don't know how they'd be as a long-term pet.

PS. Yes, the blood on my forearm in the first picture is from a bite. I was moving too much trying to pose him for a picture, and he didn't like that movement.

That king is a beauty. Looks like it has a lot of desert king in it.

What state is that from??

Thanx

He's from southeastern Louisiana about 15 or so miles southeast of Baton Rouge. As far as I know, Louisiana has no desert kingsnake population with which the speckled kingsnakes could interbreed. This guy is natural for the area and looks similar to others I've found on the road near my home. Fortunately, this guy was alive. Most of the ones I see have been hit by cars. Sadly, we're losing some habitat. Wooded areas near where I found him are being bulldozed to make room for homes of people moving to this area after the hurricanes.
