Dumeril gene pool

amarilrose Jan 21, 2006 08:20 AM

I've heard some pretty ugly things about the captive population of Dumeril's Boas in the US, specifically that there were originally only 4 individuals that were imported, and every Dumeril's Boa in the US is descended from those 4 individuals.

I've also seen on one or two breeders' websites claims that some new Dumeril's Boas were imported from Europe (and that those breeders' animals were descended from the European imports).

Does anyone know the vallidity of any of these rumors? I was thinking of breeding my female some day, but I don't want to breed her unless I can find an unrelated male!

I would really like to know what anyone has to say.

the only thing ive heard regarding Dumeril boas is that they are feared and killed by the locals (madagascar, i believe). based on the numbers killed, this rumor may be true. some places and organizations list the Dumeril boa as an endangered species, so it may well be possible that a very small number of the boas were exported before any ban on exporting this particular species went into effect. or it could just be a bunch of bs.

Well, there weren't many Dumerils to start off with. I'd have to look at my papers to get accurate info, but here's some rough info. They were bred in zoos, then offered to some in the public sector. For a while things such as small eye syndrome started to appear, seemingly from inbreeding. Dumerils were at one time one of only two snakes on the SSP(species survival plan) and they are CITES app. 1 animals which makes importing/exporting them difficult at best. They can be though if the proper paperwork is in order, and you meet certain criteria. Now, as the story goes, Dr. Gordon Schuette imported Dumerils from Sweden(aka Swedish bloodline). After he did his work with them, Kevin Hanley acquired them, produced more and sold them. I purchased several animals from Kevin, and I've produced several litters with these animals making for good outcrossed stock. There have also been animals smuggled into the country from what I have been told. Also The Bean Farm used to, and may still, offer males from animals out of the SSP program, which if being bred by AZA standards should be great stock. It's 1 a.m. I'm sorry this is so cut up and half a$$ed info but my point is....Do what you can to buy unrelated stock and you should not encounter any problems. Don't buy a pair from the same litter for breeding, try to find out as much as you can about the lineage(who the animals came from, what animal they were bred to, and where did it come from, etc.) I have Dumerils from the Harding, Sorenson, Lemke, and Swedish lines just to name a few. Wow, I'm tired-lol, e-mail me if you need more detailed stuff and I'll see what I can dig out for ya. Take care

Paul
