sinus excretion...

flbriaz Jan 21, 2006 08:34 AM

Yoshi has had a little bit of fluid coming from his nostrils. It's clear and only happens on occasion. I was wondering of this was something to be concerned about? Also, does anyone know why they leave their mouthes agape sometimes? To me it almost looks like other animals' sweating tactics, but I'm not sure. Thanks!

Yoshi really is such a beautiful Uro!

Them gaping their mouths generally has one of two purposes, panting to release heat (Mosca does this when he is too lazy to move from his hot basking spot), or if they are about to bite you. However if they aren't doing the other aggressive behaviours, like the "S" dance they are probably just panting. At least this is my understanding of this behaviour.

Hopefully Debb, Eve, or one of the other really knowledgable people will weigh in on the liquid secretion. My guess would be one of 2 things. Either it is just Yoshi getting rid of the "snalt" in his system and you happen to be catching it in liquid form, or it is the beginning of a respiratory problem. One of these would be normal, and one of them IS a reason to be concerned, that is why hopefully Lindsay or a mega-uro keeper will reply to you . Until then, make sure that your tank temps are hot enough, and just watch him for any other trouble signs.

obviously I'm not there to tell for sure, but apparently healthy uros gape/pant when the're too hot, which is completely normal. the salts/minerals excreted through the nostrils come out initially as a clear liquid which quickly turns to a white crust, again completely normal. Its actually a bit weird if your uro doesn't do this, so it sounds like things are good......

Flbriaz,

If I remember correctly, you thanked Lindsay for this ornate so I am assuming that this is where Yoshi came from.
If that is the case, I would suggest you contact Lindsay with any questions or concerns you might have with Yoshi just to put your mind at ease. I am not suggesting you ignore everyone else, I am just suggesting that you take advantage of the invaluable service that you get when purchasing your uromastyx through a reputable knowledgeable breeder like Lindsay.

I will most certainly shoot him an e-mail. Thanks Yoshi did come from Lindsay.
