Has anyone fed their snake "snake sausages"?

kc0bus Jan 21, 2006 10:57 AM

Does anyone have any experience with feeding their snakes with "snake sausages"? Which kinds of snakes will accept these "sausages" most readily? I am under the impression that not all snakes will eat them. For those that don't know what a "snake sausage" is; they are an alternative to rodents and are suitable for small to medium sized snakes. They look like small sausage links and are probably nothing more than ground up rodents compressed into a "sausage link". They have added vitamins and minerals, and some are specially formulated for individual species.

because I wanted to know if corns would eat them, so I could mention it in the book. I found that most(maybe 2/3 or more) well established corns already feeding on f/t mice will take the sausages, although you may have to scent the sausages with mice for the first several feedings.

Although the makers of the product spent a lot of years raising colubrids on a sausage diet to prove clinically that the snakes would remain healthy, I found them less convenient to use than f/t mice. I think they would be a good alternative if you can't use real mice for some reason, but I prefer mice. The sausages are made out of poultry, I believe.

T-Rex used to sell them, but I haven't looked on their website in a long time, so don't know if they still do. Contact them for more info if you are interested.
