Do milksnakes release smelly anal gland contents?

kc0bus Jan 21, 2006 11:46 AM

I read in a book that "...some kingsnakes release anal gland contents when handled. This grainy, very smelly substance is smeared over a hand or on clothing, producing a penetrating smell that is strong but somewhat sweet and clinging." I was wondering that since kingsnakes are related to milksnakes, do milksnakes have this same problem?

Yes, milk snakes musk, but in my experience, it's clear and looks like water. It doesn't stink that much, but can linger even after you wash your hands. You might want to get a scented liquid soap from Bath & Body Works to cover it up. My wife's soap from there worked like a charm for me. I think it was Orange...lol.

Yes, kings and milks musk when they are babies, but they usually calm down and don't musk anymore if you hold them often. I have 2 honduran babies, and neither one of them has musked me. My red milksnake has, though. They only do this when they think they are in danger. It is a natural defense mechanism. The stuff washes right off. Derek
